As much as I love fish and seafood, I've decided to not support the fisheries that
a)take from the wild without putting anything into it
b)farm fish in such away as it's more devasting to local populations as simple overfishing
c)consider "bi-catch" as an acceptable part of the industry, especially in the gross amounts that are present. Nevermind the dead sea turtles, birds and dolphins.

If I eat fish, it's only if it's from a single line and no other animals were harmed from it's taking.

Two things concern me here.
1. Should we take away people's lively hood because a river is dirty?
2. Will eating this fish (basa it's called in our stores) make me sick?

Well the river is dirty all right. they say that less than 2 percent is inspected. That's standard. Of the stuff inspected they said it was full of all sorts of unhealthy stuff. If it was bad they would take it off the shelves. If it's not great but acceptable then good, let's eat. Human waste will not bake the fish poison. Beer factories will not make the fish poison. Toxic chemicals will, but how toxic are these fish? 1 part per billion of lead does mean that the fish contain led, but is it an unsafe amount? Our own drinking water is full of chemicals but in amounts that do not hurts us.
Because I find their argument unconvincing I'm going to keep eating basa. I like it.
Also there is the human factor. 80 million people how need a lively hood. If we have one hundred rivers to provide a lively hood for the 80 million people of that land then so be it. It's fine to criticize a nation for being dirty (caugh, USA, caugh), but when poverty and famine is a bigger concern, I'm not going to get too picky about how dirty the rivers are.

That's the way I see it, for what it's worth.
