Default Re: SQUEE!! Crested Gecko!

I'm not sure ... I bought one yesterday and already can't remember the brand lol. It's just one that has a flat top and is digital ... anyways ...

I had a weigh night last night and Bianca is 32 grams so she is definiately a good size and big enough to sex and she has no large bulge at the base of her tail. I was a little worried and second guessing myself until I weighed her and looked again but I've been looking at some pictures all morning and I'm convinced she's a she for sure. Which is awesome because the name "Bianco" is not nearly as wicked as "Bianca" lol

EDIT: we posted at the same time lol ... I think I probably got the same one you did ... it's white and has a flat top with the on/off/tare button on the left and the lbs/g/oz button on the other?

THAT'S THE ONE!! lol.. Yes, little thing excite me.

32 grams is wicked, she's at a pretty good weight so far. I would definately say female for sure. Usually you'll have late bloomers around the 25 gram mark, but upwards of that I've never heard of anyone have a bulge suddenly drop.

Now get some more pictures up already will ya?

No matter though my parents said that if it did turn out to be a he i'll be allowed to get another female! My only good crestie egg is currently doing very well and going to hatch soon. Wow..... rambling about myself sorry lol. I hope this is only the first of many cresties u get because they are just amazing reptiles.

Thanks Good to hear about your new addition too! I plan on picking up another one or two cresties to make a nice little community in a big tank I've got. It won't be for a while yet though ... so we'll see. Still working on getting good pictures up of her ... doh!! lol

As much as I understand your desire to stay away from crickets, they are one of the best protein sources you can give to cresteds (aside from Dubia roaches, but they're unfortunately banned in Canada).
The problem with worms, especially if you were to use King Worms or the like, is that their exoskeletons are tougher than most other feeders and can be much more difficult to digest, which can cause impaction. And although rare, there have been incidents when they've chewed through stomach lining, causing irreparable damage.
Of course, it is totally your decision what you feed, but Heather mentioned a very good point that cresteds absolutely LOVE to hunt and worms also aren't traditionally active enough to catch their attention as are crickets. Even when a cricket has got their attention, it sometimes takes them a few minutes to pinpoint precisely where to strike, especially if they're hunting during the day when their vision is limited.
If you can get your hands them, I've heard they go nuts over wax moths, so that could be a very viable option for you. The only downside to those is that if they escape, they'll chew absolutely anything they find, from clothing to furniture, to drywall even, so you have to be very careful to keep them contained, however given the amount you'd need to feed a single crested, they wouldn't cause too much damage, I'm sure.
As for a staple diet, we've found Clark's Diet to be much more desirable to cresteds than Repashy, and the growth rates are phenomenal (no, there's no growth hormone added to it). Again, that's entirely your decision, but if you'd like more information on Clark's, go to http://clarksdiet.com/ or http://www.gondwanalandgeckos.com/clarks.html. The only difference between sites is location; one is based in Ontario and the other in Vancouver.
I hope that helped and I am looking forward to seeing the little gaffer!

Liz

ha ha ha luckily, I just got my camera cord back from Ian (which he and Amber so kindly toted back to Edmonton, from Drumheller, for me due to my inherent forgetfulness LOL) and I DO have some fun pictures of her ... including proof of what an enormous pig she is and how much she loves her Repashy food from the wonderful Kelley (Jazzy, Belle and Daddy).

Her tank ... I have a light on it just to create a day/night cycle because it stays pretty dark in that shelf ...

Her dish the day after I "showed" her the Repashy ...

Oinker ... lol!

She gets much darker than this at night or once she has been active for a while. Her stripes become really well defined and her crest gets darker. She also gets more of a rusty orange. I have yet to be able to really get those colours with my silly little point and shoot ... I have a feeling I may be borrowing my dad's camera for a crestie photoshoot sometime in the near future lol
