Contact Mads Lund (Canden Pet Supply) about the Button Quail Eggs.
403-505-6448.
Depending on how fresh you need the eggs, I have about 50 that are over 3 months old in my fridge. They are old enough that my egg eater won't eat them anymore, but they may still be good for your purpose (Savanahs, I am assuming).

i will bug mads, but i was considering breeding the birds and feeding the monitor the chick, as a few people on the varanus forums do this (not specifically for savs mind you)

Mads also sells frozen chicks (I'm not sure if he sells his live ones or not...).
Matt
I don't have that many buttons available right now, but I should have lots of chicks available in 6 weeks or so if you want to wait for them. Just a heads up, you will need to get an incubator, as they are not the best setters. They are quite prolific however, they mature in about 8 weeks.

Hi, if you want regular frozen chicks, I have day old chicks available right now. Contact me at info@snakesnax.com . Day old chicks are $.60 ea.
Les.
If you want day old chicks call Miller hatcheries, they often have culls for little or no charge.

If you're thinking about keeping buttons in your house you need to know that they smell really bad. Ours were really cool until it got cold out and we brought them inside. They have a musky smell like pheasants that will stink up your whole house in no time. I would think that their chicks would be very tiny for feeders, also.

hmm that's interesting...i'll have to think/read more then...how were you keeping them?
i'm not worried about their size. i know they are small things, and my monitors won't care, they'll just eat a couple of them instead of 1

If they are tasty, could add a whole other tier to Turducken(incase anyone is wondering thats boneless duck stuffed in a boneless chicken, stuffed in a boneless turkey then baked to perfection). Supposedly some Arabian price took that reciple to a whole other level and had 16 different birds in the reciple, if I ever get condemned to death in the U.S. thats my last meal.
Sorry...bit of a derail.
What about raising something like chicken or ducks? Would a Savannah monitor readily eat those? Or would they be unhealthy for it?

it would probably eat them, but button quails are like 4 inches tall, and need very little space compared to a chicken or duck. a duck would be cool though...

Arent Quails loud? My father lives on some land where the guy breeds quail and pheasants etc to hunt, he complains about them calling every morning, evening and mid day. I am sure if you lived in a town or city, you wouldnt even be permitted to keep them, or would need permission of all your neighbours and the city. Mind you it could just be that species he raises that is loud. Kind of like with some ducks, stuff like mallards and the Japanese breed are pretty vocal, whereas some barely ever make any noise.

i haven't seen much about these guys being loud, except that males get loud constantly if they have no woman...
they make standard little quail noises i guess...
probably a lot quieter than a big rooster every morning when the sun comes up :D

They really are adorable and ours were very quiet. At first I wondered why they weren't popular as pets until we brought them in the house. We kept them outside in pens in the barn, but we had no heat. After a couple of days in the house we ran a cord so they could have a heat lamp in their house.
Ours were even prettier than they look in that picture, but foxes got in and bye-bye all our birds.

Quails are so noisy! A couple daycamps had them for "class pets" and it was like setting off a security alarm if I entered their camp room alone. Jeebus, make me jump out of my skin.
They definitely stink up the joint.
Also you need to have them in a taller enclosure as they startle easy and can break their necks on the top when they jump.
Here is the breeder I got mine from years ago:

okay so they are all good and fun, but they do stink.
do they destroy cage stuff?
i was thinking of using a flexarium to keep them in, as it would be soft on their head (i read about the boink factor...), but i'm curious if they would chew up the flex and escape (or hurt themselves)
can they be kept in an unheated/poorly insulated garage over the winter months with a heat producing device?
