GET “RATTLED” AT

T.A.R.A.S (The Alberta Reptile and Amphibian Society)

FALL SHOW & SALE

Calgary, AB – The Alberta Reptile & Amphibian Society (T.A.R.A.S.) announces their Annual Fall Show and Sale Saturday, September 12th (10am – 5pm) & Sunday, September 13th (10am – 4pm) at the Ogden Legion (2625 78th Avenue SE). Tickets for both days are available at the door.

40+ vendors from across Canada will be on hand to display, sell, reptile-related goods and educate Calgarians about reptiles as pets. The T.A.R.A.S. Fall Show and Sale will also feature an interactive Kid’s Corner, where Calgarians can interact and hold bearded dragons, corn snakes, leopard geckos, etc in a safe and controlled environment. For many this is the first time they have ever touched a reptile. Numerous people have helped fight their fears of reptiles, starting with a small touch on the back and quickly conquering their trepidation and holding one of these incredible animals. Over 3,500 people are expected to attend the T.A.R.A.S Fall Show and sale to get up close and personal with lizards, snakes, spiders and more.

Also, as part of the T.A.R.A.S. Fall Show and Sale and the organizations mandate to promote education, conservation and responsible pet ownership, the T.A.R.A.S. Research and Educational Initiative will present researcher Adam Martinson with $1500 in funding towards mortality rate research on prairie rattlesnakes in a cheque presentation Saturday, September 12th at 2:00pm.

Adam’s research on the prairie rattlesnake has been profiled on Discovery Channel and the CTV Network; Maclean’s Magazine, the Calgary Herald, and Reuters and during the summer of 2009 Adam will be working with TV personality and Zookeeper Jack Hanna.

“The money provided by T.A.R.A.S is important because it supports continued research and conservation of prairie rattlesnakes in Alberta,” Martinson said. “This is important because the species is 'data deficient' in the province, and the more we learn about them, the greater our ability is to make the needed changes for their conservation."

“Educating the public and supporting local conservation and research efforts are a large part of our mandate,” added T.A.R.A.S president Mark IsBell. “We felt that a contribution towards Adam's research would be a good step in the right direction as far as understanding and conserving one of our native Alberta species both now and in the future. Our contribution will help him further his research and help obtain the required data to preserve this majestic and somewhat misunderstood species within our province.”

T.A.R.A.S. is a provincially registered, non-profit organization, which was formed in 1984 to help provide a network of information for anyone interested in reptiles and amphibians. The goal of T.A.R.A.S. is to promote education, conservation and responsible pet ownership by offering a wide range of resources that deal with the proper care of these fascinating, but specialized, animals.

The Alberta Reptile & Amphibian Society (T.A.R.A.S.) Annual Fall Show and Sale Friday goes September 12th & Saturday, September 13th at the Ogden Legion (2625 78th Avenue SE.) Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and $15 for a family of four available at the door.
