So on one of my neurotic rounds of counting my animals, I was met by a pleasant suprise. Two of my female emperor scorpions pumped out some large batches. Well took me forever to get them out of my tunnel system I made for them, and when I did one female dropped 4 babies... so while she was mad at me I dropped them back on her back when she wasn't looking. She didn't seem to mind.

Here they are together in the temporary container. I took some pics before I seperated them into their respective nurseries.

Thats cool, just one question though, do they know which ones are they're babies or are they able to look after each others?

Very good question... I have no clue. And frankly I had no idea which female dropped the 4 babies. So I just placed them on the first one I caught. Like I said she didn't seem to mind at all. Maybe as long as they are in intense motherhood mode they will take care of any babies. Or perhaps if this is not the case she can tell batches apart by scent, but once they are on her, maybe their scent blends in and is over powered by the rest of her original batch.

the babies that fail to stay on momma's back for too long will die and then be eaten by mom.

It's going to be interesting when we get a count on the little fellers... I'm going to say 30-ish total, of which I would like to purchase 5.....

So if they fall off, they either die or get eaten... In the meantime what else does Momma do besides carry them around? How do the babies feed, does she feed them in any way?

She crushes up crickets and feeds them. She has to be well fed though, sometimes they eat their young if they are not fed enough.

Hmmm, so they do show motherly instincts and don't leave the babies to fend for themselves... Thats kinda neat, it's too bad they sorta give me the willys, lol, they're interesting...

Steve, I used to threaten roomates that if I ever saw something like that in any place I lived, I would throw large, heavy objects at it until I was positive it was dead.

I am now caring for two, and own one. ;)

If I can cave, so can you!

Yeah, well.... I already had to hold a Tarantula cause my kid held one at one of the meetings and everybody knows thats kids aren't allowed to be braver than their Daddy, lol... And I did used to handle the Scorpions when I worked in the petstore many years back, just very weary of them is all...

Funny thing is though, most of the shows, it's the kids that are "Ooohing" and "Ahhhing" over the critters and the parents are the ones cowering in the corner...

So guess what... 42 have left the two mothers. Too bad there wasn't a prize. A few babies did die (two that had fallen off), and one mother crushed one under her foot then ate it. So 45 that I know of, 42 survivors.
